Remove an image background

How to remove an image background

  1. 1

    Add an image

Drop, paste or choose a JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF or HEIC. Several files run one after another.

  2. 2

    Wait for the cutout

The first visit downloads the model and shows the size as it arrives. After that it is cached, and the cutout is ready in a few seconds.

  3. 3

    Set the background

Keep it transparent, or place the subject on white, black, a colour or a blur of the original. Soften, shift or feather the edge if you want.

  4. 4

    Download

Save a PNG or WebP with transparency, or a JPG on a solid background. A batch can download as a zip.

A background remover that never uploads the photo

The picture is read on your device. Nothing is uploaded, and there is no account or watermark.

Most background removers send the photo to a server. This one does not. The model runs in the tab, with WebGPU when the browser has it and WebAssembly when it does not. Close the tab and the photo is gone.

Hair, pets, products and glass

The model is BiRefNet-lite, an MIT-licensed dichotomous segmenter. It is the strongest general cutout that still runs in a browser: portraits, fur, product shots on a busy table. Fine strands usually survive. A single whisker, or hair against a background of the same colour, can still break.

Glass is the honest limit. A wine glass is treated as a solid object, not as something you can see through. Put glass on the background you actually want, or expect to tidy it. No open model that fits in a phone does real glass.

Edges, and the background behind the subject

Soft keeps the model’s partial alpha, which is what holds hair. Shift grows or shrinks the mask by a few pixels. Feather blurs the boundary. Clean pulls the old background colour out of the edge so you do not get a grey fringe on white.

Transparent downloads as PNG or WebP. White, black and a chosen colour are flat. Blur uses the original photo, out of focus, behind the subject. JPG cannot store transparency, so a transparent cutout saved as JPG is flattened on white.

What the model costs the first time

Phones and low-memory computers use a 512 pixel model of about 52 MB. A desktop with WebGPU uses a 1024 pixel version of about 117 MB, and falls back if that session cannot start. The bar shows megabytes received, not a fake spinner.

Once the page has loaded, the tool keeps working offline. A background removal also needs the model, which is saved on the device after the first download.

  • The weights are MIT-licensed BiRefNet-lite. The smaller file comes with this site, and the desktop file is fetched once from Hugging Face. Both are cached in the browser.
  • The audio tools on this site do not download it. Only Remove background does.
  • Very large photos are opened at 4096 pixels on the long side so the tab does not run out of memory.

Questions

Is this background remover free?

Yes. It runs in the browser. There is no account, no daily cap and no watermark.

Does the photo get uploaded?

No. Decoding, the model and the download all stay on the device. The only download is the model, onto your device, the first time.

Will it keep hair and fur?

Usually. BiRefNet-lite is built for that. Strands against a similar colour, and very thin whiskers, are the cases to check with the edge sliders.

Can I put the subject on white?

Yes. Transparent, white, black, any colour, or a blur of the original. PNG and WebP keep transparency. JPG is flat.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. Phones use the smaller model. The first run downloads about 52 MB, then it is cached. Give it a few seconds per photo.

Can I do a batch?

Yes. Drop several images. They are cut one at a time so the tab does not run out of memory, and Download all saves a zip.
