What this online tuner is for
An online tuner listens to a note and tells you its name. This one is chromatic, so it is not locked to one instrument. Guitar, bass and ukulele modes add the open-string targets for those tunings. Any other instrument can stay on chromatic.
It is a page, not an install. Open it, allow the mic, and tune. The pitch detection runs locally. Nothing is uploaded.
Chromatic, guitar, bass and ukulele
Pick the mode that matches what you are holding. The cents are always measured from the nearest note at your A4.
| Mode | What it expects | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Chromatic | Any note | You want the note name, whatever the instrument |
| Guitar | E2 A2 D3 G3 B3 E4 | Standard six-string tuning |
| Drop D | D2 A2 D3 G3 B3 E4 | The lowest string is down a whole step |
| Bass | E1 A1 D2 G2 | A 4-string bass |
| Ukulele | G4 C4 E4 A4 | Soprano, concert or tenor ukulele |
Cents, the needle and A4
The large note is the nearest pitch. The number under it is the error in cents, and the needle shows the same error from 50 cents flat to 50 cents sharp. Within a few cents you are in tune for almost any fretted instrument.
A4 defaults to 440 Hz. 432 is one tap away, and any value from 415 to 466 works. Set the reference before you tune the first string, then leave it.
If the note jumps around
Play one note and let it sustain. Two notes at once, a loud room, or a fan blowing on the mic will make the name flicker. Move closer to the instrument and further from other noise.
Very low bass notes need a clean pluck. If the tuner hears a strong harmonic instead, play the string again a little closer to the middle.
