An online metronome that stays in time
The click is scheduled on the audio clock, a little ahead of when you hear it. Scrolling the page or a busy animation does not drag the beat late. The tempo you set is the tempo you get, from 30 BPM up to 300.
Nothing is downloaded to make the sound, and nothing is uploaded. The click is a short tone generated in the browser.
Tap tempo
Tap the Tap button at least twice, in time. The metronome averages those gaps and sets the BPM. Keep tapping and it follows you. A pause of a couple of seconds starts a fresh count, so an old tap does not throw off the next one.
If you already know the number, ignore tap and dial it in. The BPM finder can give you a number for a recording, and you can put that number here to practise along.
Time signatures and the accent
Each click is one beat. The first beat of the bar is louder and the first dot is larger, so you can see where you are without staring.
6/8 counts six clicks in the bar, with the accent on the first. If you feel 6/8 as two big beats, set the BPM to that slower pulse and use 2/4 instead.
| Signature | Clicks in a bar | Accent |
|---|---|---|
| 2/4 | 2 | Beat 1 |
| 3/4 | 3 | Beat 1 |
| 4/4 | 4 | Beat 1 |
| 6/8 | 6 | Beat 1 |
Phones and silent mode
Browsers block sound until you press something. Start is that press. If a phone call or the silent switch stops the click, press Start again and it picks up on the next beat instead of firing a handful of late clicks.
The visual dots follow the same clock as the sound. If the screen is busy they may skip a frame. The click does not.
